How to Choose Colours that Flatter Your Skin Tone
Looking for the perfect coloured dress to wear to a
party or can’t figure out which makeup palette to buy? Or are you trying to
decide what color to dip dye your hair?
The answers to all these questions are directly linked
to the color of your skin. We all have different skin tones and certain colors
suit some people while those same colors may not suit people with a different
skin tone.
Sometimes, we find ourselves particular fond of one
colour but realize that every time we never receive admiration or appreciation
for our look when we where it. Instead, you may find yourself getting more
compliments wearing colours very different from your own favourite.
Here are some ways to identify which colours will suit
your skin tone-
1. Check your
veins:
This is the oldest trick in the book. Pull up your
sleeves and check to see whether your veins are green or blue. If your veins
seem to look blue that means you have a cool skin tone and if they look green
then you have a warm skin tone. Warm complexions have yellow undertones and
cool complexions have pink undertones.
For those with a warm skin tone, you can try earthy
coloured outfits such as brown, orange, golden and olive green. Yellow would
also work.
On the other hand, shades of blue, pink and purple
really suit girls with cooler skin tones.
2. Jewellery
test:
If by looking at your veins, you are unable to
identify what kind of skin tone you have try jewellery. Take gold and silver
necklaces and bracelets and analyze how they look on your body under good
lighting.
If gold makes your skin look healthier and brighter,
you are warm-toned and if silver makes your skin look better, you are cool-toned.
3. White paper
test:
Juxtapose a piece of white paper with your skin. Which
colours jump out?
If your answer is blue and pink colours then you are
cool toned.
However, if your answer is green and gold, then you
are definitely warm-toned.
For some people with a neutral skin colour, the skin
tone may change depending on season or time of year.
4. Season
determination:
Once you have decided whether you are cool-toned or
warm-toned you have to choose among further sub-divisions which are summer,
winter, fall and spring.
Summer- You are cool-toned and your skin does not
contrast very much against your hair or eyes. Wear pastel colours like lilac
and pale blue and colours with rose undertones. Soft and neutral shades are
ideal for this season.
Winter- You are cool-toned. Your skin starkly
contrasts against your eyes and hair. Vibrant blues, pinks and purples or sharp
colours like white, black or navy blue.
Fall- You have golden, warm or yellow undertones.
Clothes with yellow and orange undertones are perfect for this season. Colours
like peach, ochre and coral.
Spring- You have golden, peach or cream undertones.
Warm and deep colours such coffee, caramel, beige and green.
Conclusion:
After using these tests to determine which skin tone
you have, choose your clothes, hair colour and make up accordingly. The
descriptions given above for the clothes also work for the hair. For example,
someone who is really pale with black hair (winter) could dip dye their hair a
vibrant pink or violet.
Silver, platinum and white gold jewellery for cool
skin tones and gold, bronze and copper jewellery for warm skin tones.
It is important to remember that someone with a very
pale skin tone should stay away from pastel colours because that causes their
colouration to look washed out and dull.
Someone with an extremely dark skin tone can try rich,
metallic hues such as copper and bronze which will further highlight their
natural tones. Bright berry tones on the lips make the lips of a darker skinned
person pop so that is another tip.
Someone with a moderately light brown skin colour can
try a bright yellow or even an orange. Copper red highlights would really suit
your hair.
All of this newfound knowledge about your skin tone
will help you choose your personalized colour palette during your next shopping
trip. Make sure to pick colours that will accentuate your natural features. Once you discover the
perfect colour palette for yourself, nothing can stop you from looking like the
best version of yourself!
